"Over the last decade, much attention has been paid to engineering risks associated with calamities such as the Indian Ocean tsunami, hurricanes in the US, terrorist attacks, and the sudden collapse of engineered structures. Future events are largely unpredictable, but statistics and probabilistic approaches provide powerful tools for managing risks." "This book contains papers presented at the Tenth International Conference on Application of Statistics and Probability in Civil Engineering (ICASPIO), Tokyo, Japan, 2007. This event is organized once in every four years under the auspices of Civil Engineering Risk and Reliability Association (CERRA). The conference brought together scientists, educators, researchers and practitioners, with an interest in the management of uncertainty, risk and reliability in all aspects of civil engineering." "The papers in the present volume address current and developing theories, applied research, and innovative applications in broad areas including reliability theory, uncertainty modeling and analysis, stochastic methods, system identification, sensor and health monitoring, life cycle assessment, performance-based engineering, and risk assessment and management. Particular focus is placed on applications of probability theory and statistics in all aspects of civil engineering and related fields, including aerospace engineering, construction and management, earthquake engineering, environmental engineering, marine engineering, nuclear engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, wind engineering and trans-disciplinary engineering."
