The book presents the concepts of genetics and examines their variation: Genes is the basic functional units of heredity. They are composed of DNA and contain information that determines specific traits; Chromosomes consist of long DNA molecules complexed with protein. They contain many genes; Eukaryotes are organisms in which the genetic material is contained within a membrane-bound nucleus, and prokaryotes are organisms that do not have their genetic material contained within a membrane-bound nucleus. In both eukaryotes and prokaryotes, the flow of information is from DNA to RNA to protein; Structural proteins result in the physical forms of life, Enzymatic protein result in the biochemical processes of life; The Genotype refers to the inherited genes in an organism, the Phenotype refers to the physical appeareance of an organism, the Norm of Reaction refers to the environment-phenotype relationship for a specific genotype, Developmental noise is the random variation that occurs in phenotype when both genotype and environment are held constant; Genetic dissection is the process of identifying the specific hereditary components of a biological system
