The book is divided into three parts: Development and function of the immune system, immunodeficiency disorders, and immunologic aspects of pediatric illness. Much information on the secretory immune system, including breast milk and the enteromammary circulation hve been added. The functional defects of the immature immune system are outline in detailed. The book also describes 47 primary and 35 secondary immunodeficiencies as listed in the World Health Organization Classification. The genes for several of these diseases have been identified, and the texts on pathogenesis reflect these findings. Other syndromes have been subdivided into distinct clinical entities. New treatments such as gene therapy, cytokine administration and transplantation are discussed. The book also presents pediatric HIV infection, including its virology, immunology, clinical manifestations, and treatment. Part 3 includes dermatologic disorders , hematologic disorders, including malignancy in immunodeficiency states. New therapies, such as methotrexate for arthritis, intravenous immunoglobulin for Kawasaki disease, and oral tolerance for multiple sclerosis, are discussed. Appendices on leukocyte CD (cluster designation) antigens and cytokines have also been added
