Tóm tắt : | 17 p. The field of public health ophthalmology offers many opportunities for research and practice of comprehensive eye health care which includes prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. It is not a subspecialty; it is a new dimension of ophthalmology as a science and a service. A meeting on the role and functions of national institutes of ophthalmology was convened in Brussels on 11–14 December 1978 by the Regional Office for Europe of the World Health Organization (WHO). Its purpose was to review the knowledge and experience gained so far by existing national institutes of ophthalmology, to define the optimal role and functions of such institutes in a public health context, to outline recommendations to national authorities concerning the possible establishment of such institutes where they did not already exist, and to make suggestions for research and other measures to be undertaken in professional fields relevant to eye care. The participants came from 10 countries of the WHO European Region and from the United States of America. They included ophthalmologists, epidemiologists, an educationalist and an economist. |
