Acting on the root causes of poor health and well-being in childhood and adolescence canimprove health across the life-course. Many of the most pressing health problems cannot besolved without addressing the underlying social determinants of health and engaging sectorsbeyond health. Numerous social, economic, environmental, political, cultural and commercialdeterminants affect the health and well-being of young people, both in childhood and in laterlife, and that of future generations, and many influence children’s social, emotional andcognitive development more broadly. Intersectoral action for health and well-being, inaccordance with Health 2020, the European policy and strategy framework for health andwell-being across the WHO European Region, is therefore critical for addressing thedeterminants of health of children and adolescents. Health inequalities among children existthroughout the European Region, both within and between countries. Intersectoral action forhealth can help to alleviate inequalities by ensuring that all vulnerable children gain the mostfrom policies and interventions. This compendium of case studies and case stories has been compiled to demonstrate examplesof cooperation between (1) the health and education sectors and (2) the health and socialsectors within the WHO European Region. This is the first edition of a compendium of casestudies and case stories compiled for the High-level conference on promoting intersectoraland interagency action for health and well-being in the WHO European Region: workingtogether for better health and well-being, in Paris, France, held on 7–8 December 2016. iv, 72 p.
